QUAD: The Strategic Security Alliance


Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or QUAD is a strategic security alliance to form an Asian Arc of Democracy and Defence by India, Japan, Australia and USA. It is also known as QSD which facilitates close cooperation in safeguarding common interests and is complemented by joint military exercises and tactical dialogue regarding the Indo Pacific Region. QUAD tries to balance the aggressive posture of China in East and South China Sea by close knitted counter alliances.

QUAD was established in Aug. 2007 in Manila on the sidelines of ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) by Japanese PM Shinzo Abe. It was reestablished in 2017 and is pursued aggressively by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.


In March 2021 QUAD members jointly stressed on the “Spirit of Quad” to facilitate a free and open Indo Pacific, thus ideating the implementation of East and South China Seas by a by rules based maritime order.


QUAD Plus includes representatives from South Korea, Vietnam and New Zealand.


On Sept. 24th 21 QUAD leaders namely, US President Joe Biden, Indian PM Narendra Modi, Japanese PM Suga Yoshihide and Australian PM Scott Morrison met in Washington DC. to strengthen core areas of cooperation.


QUAD-2: Recent Foreign Minister Talks on Oct. 19th 21 between India, Israel, UAE AND USA are exploring the possibility of a new QUAD.
